“It's a Good Life” (The Twilight Zone)

This assignment is based on the Twilight Zone episode It's a Good Life.

  1. What defines morality (right and wrong) in the imaginary world shown in the video?
  2. What are the strengths of that way of defining morality?  Explain your answer.
  3. What are the weaknesses?  Explain your answer.
  4. How does the statement “The individual person always defines morality” contradict itself?  (Hint: Do all people think that their own opinions ought to define morality?)
  5. What would a society be like where everyone tried to make everyone else follow her own view of right and wrong?  For example, you could describe what it would be like in the United States if every citizen tried to make the whole country obey her own rules.
  6. In what ways is God similar to the monster in the way He defines morality?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  7. In what ways is He different?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  8. What is the most reliable means God has given for us to know what is right and wrong?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  9. List three areas where you think God is changing your own view of right and wrong.  Give a Bible passage for each one and explain what the Bible says about each of those areas.

Column A.  Something I used to think was right (or wrong)

Column B.  A Bible passage that changed or is changing my mind about the thing in Column A

Column C.  What the Bible says about the thing in Column A
