“On Thursday We Leave for Home” (The Twilight Zone)

This assignment is based on the Twilight Zone episode On Thursday We Leave for Home.

  1. Who is defining right and wrong for everyone else in the beginning of the video?
  2. What reasons does he have for doing this?
  3. What do you think would have happened if he had let the people do whatever they wanted?
  4. What book of the Bible describes the situation you gave as the answer to the question before this one?  Find and copy down one verse in that book that summarizes that situation.
  5. How does Captain Benteen lose his authority?
  6. Why was he unable to keep his authority?
  7. In what ways is God similar to Captain Benteen in the way He defines morality?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  8. In what ways is He different?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  9. What makes God able to define morality for every single person even though Captain Benteen is not able to?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  10. Does this mean that we should never listen to people when they tell us what is right and wrong?  Explain your answer.
  11. What is the most reliable way God has given us to know whether other people are right or wrong?  Give at least one Bible passage to support your answer.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
  12. Read the dialogue below and then write out an ending to the conversation between Andrea and Becky.

    Dialogue:

    Andrea: Morals are not absolute.

Becky: What do you mean by that?

Andrea: I mean that each person can decide for herself what is right and what is wrong.

Becky: So do you think anyone can be wrong, then?

Andrea: No, no one can be wrong.  Everyone is right in her own way.

Becky: But the Bible teaches that people who don’t rely on God’s authority are sinners.

    Andrea: What do you mean?

Becky: When God says we need to do something and we choose to do something else, we guilty of doing wrong because God deserves to always be obeyed.  Do you believe that this is true?

    Andrea: It’s true for you.

Becky: But if God is real, then it’s true for everybody because God made everybody.  Are you saying that I’m wrong?

    Andrea: __________________________

    Becky: ___________________________

    Andrea: __________________________

    … etc. …

  13.  Explain why Andrea MUST contradict herself (say something that goes against what she said earlier) in order to finish this conversation.

  14. Read Becky’s bold-faced sentence again.  Give at least one Bible passage supporting that sentence.  Either summarize the passage in your own words or copy down at least one verse in the passage.  Explain why the passage supports your answer.
